Jamie
Young Adult GED Program

When Jamie isn’t at the Log School preparing for the upcoming GED exam, he’s in the recording studio on Talbot Street.  For Jamie, making beats and writing rhymes is his outlet, and dreaming about a career in “the industry” gives him motivation.  “I write about the things I see, the things I go through. I’m in the studio everyday just to be off the streets, to stay out of trouble.”

Jamie had to leave his high school because he would have been too old by his senior year to graduate.  Jamie, who is 18 years old, plans on passing the GED exam this summer.  “You can’t do anything without a high school diploma or GED. You can’t keep money in your pocket or do the things you want to do.”

For the entirety of his time at Log School, teacher Ismail has been a constant support for Jamie.  “He’s not like other teachers.  He’s always looking out for my well-being, asking about the things I’m going through and tells me to take care of myself.”  For many of the students working towards a GED, simply passing the test won’t ensure later success.  However, when paired with mentors such as Ismail, students like Jamie have a better chance of developing the confidence necessary to achieve their goals. “There needs to be more places like Log School around here,” he says.
